Every Christian walking the face of the earth has taken a position that is antagonistic to the kingdom of darkness. The implication of this, is choosing to situate oneself in a highly volatile spiritual environment, characterised by constant engagement in hostilities with the powers of darkness.
Now, we know that wars and battles are won on the basis of strategic intelligence, rather than by brute or crude force. In the book of Daniel 9:2, the Bible says:
In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.
Daniel understood by books; through study of Jeremiah’s prophecies concerning the promised freedom from Babylonian captivity. This insight equipped Daniel to embark on the strategic prayer and fasting that yielded results.
Daniel did what the Lord said we should do in Isaiah 43:26:

Put me in remembrance: let us plead together: declare thou, that thou mayest be justified.
In prayer, we must put the Lord in remembrance like a lawyer in the court of law, making a strong case on the basis of the law. We cannot do this if we have no knowledge, insight or understanding.
Proverbs 11:9 says:
An hypocrite with his mouth destroyeth his neighbour: but through knowledge shall the just be delivered.
Gaining the upper hand in spiritual warfare is not by empty zeal for prayer without knowledge and insight, neither is it by religious fanaticism or sensationalist exuberance. Praying and fasting strategically achieves expected results.
